Grazing bull in Litchfield CT ………
Cheryl looked on as I photographed this beautiful farm scene in Litchfield CT. Framed by two trees these cows, or bulls, grazed on this sloping field speckled with yellow wild flowers. This is actually the backside of the farm I posted on the same date. Beautiful Roxbury CT!
Located in eastern CT about a 20-25 minute ride east of Waterbury CT sits the lovely town of Roxbury CT. Settled in 1796 with a current population of around 2200 people you feel like you’ve gone back in time. It was so nice to see such an expansive area that had not been disturbed by the modern trend of “farmland to residential/commercial use”. Cheryl and I didn’t have time to drive through the entire town but all the area’s we were in seemed like original undisturbed farmland many of which had barns still standing. Some of which were working farms today. This particular barn was the gem of the day…

The Bomba Bros. Farm 79 Great Hill Rd, Seymour, CT 06483 This article will take you on a short snippet of a family’s century long journey. What you will read encapsulates why I’ve spent years traveling around Southern CT photographing barns and farms. To me it represents a simpler time, a less cluttered time. A time when the work at hand was tackled by strong, disciplined families, with a work ethic that can only be emulated. Done for the day in Shelton.
The sunsets on another day of farming in the country side of Shelton CT. The hay conveyor sits idol as daylight fades. These two barns are in pretty good condition. The silo stands majestically through the trees.
I’m standing in the center of Birdseye Rd to take this shot. It is a very rural, infrequently traveled road on the outskirts of Shelton CT. If it wasn’t for my reflective vest you’d have difficulty seeing me due to all the shade the surrounding tree’s provided. I see a pickup truck slowly approaching me. Sure enough it was the owner of the farm. I’ve met a fair amount of farmers over the years while photographing their barns and they all share one thing in common. Rooster Rise Farm, Berlin CT
Looks like this beautiful large aging red barn, situated on the Rooster Rise Farm, has weathered many a storm and is still proudly standing. It has a very grand design and a thing of beauty in the countryside of Berlin, CT. I’m not from Berlin so I don’t know exactly what they farm at the Rooster Rise Farm. I didn’t see any cattle so I’m presuming its vegetables these days. That’s just a guess however. The roof looked to be in good condition, not counting the deteriorating roof of the one level structure in front of it that you can barely see through the tall grass. I hope the owners…

The old Greenbacker Dairy barn?
This is a very attractive old barn whose silo’s peek out of the top right corner on Murdock Ave., in Meriden CT. Across the street sits a building that once housed the Greenbacker farm dairy store. As a kid in the 1960’s my parents would bring me here for delicious ice cream. It was always a treat to visit the diary store from Wallingford…..good memories! This barn is situated directly across the street. The diary farm store is no longer in existence but the building still stands and has another business in it. I don’t know who currently owns this barn/farm but I suspect that it belonged to the Greenbackers…

Setting sun on a beautifully aged Meriden barn.
I had my list of barns to find this day and when I came upon this one it did not disappoint. Not only had it aged beautifully but, typically, any barn scene with majestic silos will usually shine in an image. Just on the other side of the barn, (out of picture), were about a half dozen dairy cows in a small pasture. Photographed with a Sony Nex 7, 24MP, mirrorless camera and Sony 18-55 mm lens at 36mm. 1/320th, f11, ISO 400, Aperture priority.
