My beautiful wife Cheryl commemorated by 65th birthday with this beautiful CASE brand knife that she had inscribed. I’m now officially a senior citizen.

I’ve been a collector of folding pocket knives for many years and this addition just made my day! I’m especially fond of CASE knives as they are made in the USA, good quality and are affordably priced. The American flag on the stag handle couldn’t have been more perfect for an old patriot like myself. Thank you honey!!!

This knife was not photographed conventionally but rather I light painted it.

Here’s the nitty gritty:

1. Knife was set up on a table top in my studio.
2. Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 40mm f2.8 macro lens.
3. Tethered to my computer using Helicon Remote software.
4. F16, 5 second exposure, ISO 100. I used a hand held flash light. Clicked the shutter – the 5 seconds began.
7. During the 5 seconds I “painted” the light very quickly onto the blades and handle. I actually only took about 1 second to “paint” the light on. The remaining 4 seconds were just to make sure I had enough time to do it.
8. At the completion of the exposure I could see the results on my computer instantly by using Helicon Remote.
9. Because light painting isn’t an exact science it may take a few attempts to get the result you want. In my case I was happy with the 3rd attempt.

Light painting can be done indoors, out doors, for product shots, still life etc. etc. It’s definitely a deviation from the norm and something you might enjoy. Search light painting on the web and in YouTube. You’ll be sure to find some fun stuff!
