The old Greenbacker Dairy barn?
This is a very attractive old barn whose silo’s peek out of the top right corner on Murdock Ave., in Meriden CT. Across the street sits a building that once housed the Greenbacker farm dairy store. As a kid in the 1960’s my parents would bring me here for delicious ice cream. It was always a treat to visit the diary store from Wallingford…..good memories! This barn is situated directly across the street. The diary farm store is no longer in existence but the building still stands and has another business in it. I don’t know who currently owns this barn/farm but I suspect that it belonged to the Greenbackers…

Setting sun on a beautifully aged Meriden barn.
I had my list of barns to find this day and when I came upon this one it did not disappoint. Not only had it aged beautifully but, typically, any barn scene with majestic silos will usually shine in an image. Just on the other side of the barn, (out of picture), were about a half dozen dairy cows in a small pasture. Photographed with a Sony Nex 7, 24MP, mirrorless camera and Sony 18-55 mm lens at 36mm. 1/320th, f11, ISO 400, Aperture priority.

Bird in Flight Photography – Hubbard Park
[wzslider autoplay=”true” height=”800″ lightbox=”true”] This was my first attempt at bird in flight photography or what is known amongst photographers as “birding”. My current systems didn’t have fast enough autofocus to handle birds in flight. However, I purchased the new Nikon D7100 which shoots 6fps, has 51 point AF and autofocuses with lenses F8 or faster. This feature is normally only found on hi-end pro camera’s whereas most camera’s in this price range only AF at 5.6 or faster. This allows more lens choices or perhaps a multiplier. I coupled this with the also new Nikon 80-400, AFS-VR, 4.0-5.6 lens. I took about 400 photo’s this afternoon and surprisingly had…

Abandoned Tractor – Meriden, CT
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”] This tractor and barn sat on property across from the Westfield Shopping Mall in Meriden, CT for years unattended. Target moved in and developed the land. The tractor remained for a few years at the entrance to Target but was demolished sometimes during 2012. I found this to be a rather interesting scene.

Giuffrida Park
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]Guifrida Park is a bit of a hidden gem located on the east side of Meriden, CT utilized most by locals. It comprises about 600 acres and it’s beautiful lake is most prominent as many walking trails wind around it. The park is great for picnics, sunbathing, hiking, nature walks, and just general exploration. In the winter the terrain is great for snow shoe hikes. There are a couple of outlooks along the trails offering beautiful views. I stopped by today to see if I could grab a last minute “fall foliage” photo before it slips away on us into winter. I was surprised to see mid-day…

While there I was taken on a guided tour by a retired CT State Trooper. The tour comprised approx. (6) rooms full of historical artifacts from uniforms, Harley’s, photo’s, films and weapons. During my tour I had the honor of meeting Retired CSP Lt. Edward Steele. I’m told that Lt. Steele generally drives over to the museum every…
