Cheryl and I had targeted the Permaquid Lighthouse in New Harbor ME as a must shot for us. Upon arriving, in early September, we were quick to confirm that we certainly were not disappointed. This was perhaps one of the most serene peaceful and beautiful locations that we had ever photographed.

Unfortunately my image doesn’t pay justice to what you really feel when you’re here. When you walk away from the parking area into the grounds and see this majestic view of the ocean and it’s absolutely breathtaking rock ledges you’ll be had.

Once back in my office and looking at my images I had wished that I shot a pano or a wide angle image. The expansiveness of the rock ledge to the left and right of lighthouse isn’t reflected in my shot and it is considerable.

There are probably bigger, nicer, more interesting lighthouses but the grounds this lighthouse sits on can’t be beat. As you walk down amongst the striated rock formations and hear the pounding of the oceans waves in the background you’re quickly reminded of how small you are in such a magnificent world. Frankly, we didn’t want to leave. If we lived in the area we’d be back, with camera in hand, time and time again. Not necessarily for the imagery, although I wouldn’t scoff at it, but for the peace it brings us.

If you look closely at the image of the lighthouse with the small red building to the left of it you’ll see a couple of people seated. We had the good pleasure of chatting with them for a while. Turns out they are almost exactly the same ages as Cheryl and I and live a couple of towns over from us in Central CT. Kind of cool.

I also photographed the keepers house. I’d take care of that lighthouse year round if it meant I could live there and have that view. OMG! Not too shabby.
