    Plumtrees School, Bethel CT

Chery, myself and Molloy (our dog) pulled into the driveway of the Plumtrees School and I was able to capture this photograph. The Plumtrees School in Bethel, Connecticut, is a historic one-room schoolhouse built in 1867 on land donated by Eliza Benedict. It originally served the Plumtrees District, one of Bethel’s five school districts at the time. Over the years, the school underwent several changes: – In 1881, a cupola and bell were added to the building. – In 1957, it was closed for renovations, during which electricity and indoor plumbing were installed for the first time. – It reopened in 1962 as a kindergarten but was permanently closed in…

“The Old Cider Mill”, Glastonbury CT

The Old Cider Mill 287 Main Street Glastonbury CT PH: 860 657-9197 Cheryl, Molloy (our dog) and I dropped by The Old Cider Mill on a Sunday winter afternoon.  The facility was closed and unoccupied so getting an unencumbered good shot was easy. *The Old Cider Mill in Glastonbury, Connecticut, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating cider mill in the United States. Its history dates back to the early 19th century, though the current building was constructed around the 1870s. Over the years, it has become a cherished landmark, offering a glimpse into the region’s agricultural heritage. Per their website it appears Riverview Farms operates the mill.…

White Oak Schoolhouse, Southbury CT (c.1840)

This blog entry is part of an ongoing project called “One Room Schoolhouses in CT”).  If you’re interested in the history of one room schoolhouses in CT I suggest you purchase CONNECTICUT SCHOOLHOUSES THROUGH TIME by Melinda K. Elliott. This book was has been a very helpful resource for me as I did my research. At time of writing this book was available on AMAZON. The White Oak Schoolhouse (built in 1840) 886 Main St., Southbury CT  06488 I don’t know how many years this served as a schoolhouse in this community now of 20,000 people. At the time of it’s use I’m sure the local population was quite small. It’s…

The Windmill at Aqua Turf, Southington CT

The Aqua Turf Club 556 Mulberry St. Plantsville, CT 06479 (860) 621-9335 Cheryl and I made a stop at the Aqua Turf on a day when they weren’t holding any weddings or events so the grounds were empty. We were in and out in 15 minutes. My main purpose in stopping by was to photograph their beautiful windmill. Back in the 90’s I had a professional photography business and photographed a lot of weddings throughout CT. Although there are some very beautiful options out there, no doubt, I always felt that the Aqua Turf reigned high on the list, and for good reason. Go to their website and take a…

Old cow barn(?) – Morris CT

This is a beautifully built and appears still nicely maintained barn in Morris CT. As this image was taken from the road I could not see if this was an active farm or not. The writing over the end door says “Every Farm Needs a Team”. I think this was possibly a horse barn as there were images of horses on the sign over the end door. It looks like a cow barn to me but the sign made me think otherwise. Photographed with a Sony A7RV 61mp mirrorless camera and a Sony 24-70 F2.8 GMII lens at 51mm. 1/160th, f11, ISO 400, Aperture Priority

Millers Pond State Park, Durham CT

Cheryl and I took a hike around Millers Pond in Durham CT. What a quiet little spot in the middle of the woods. One end has a very small sandy area that I guess they call a beach. Then around the park there are two or three “boulders”, for lack of a better word, that are located on the water’s edge lending themselves to sunbathing and fishing. All in all, however, there was almost no one there on the Sunday afternoon that we went. The attached photo’s show the pond itself and various points along the path we took for our hike. We caught the coolest day all summer and…

    Need rocks?

While driving around I noticed this unique pile of rocks on the outskirts of Hamden CT. Upon closer inspection it appeared to be how a local company advertising that they had rocks for sale. Accross the street there was another sign indicating that there was a nursery at the end of a dirt road. You can’t see the nursery from the road but if you’re interested you can learn more at: https://www.brokenarrownursery.com/plant-lists Photographed with a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra camera phone on auto mode.
