The Famous “Blackies Hot Dog Stand”, Cheshire CT

Blackies Restaurant (est. 1928) 2200 Waterbury Rd., Cheshire CT 06410 Blackies neon lights shine bright against the dark backdrop of this fall evening. It was 7:45 PM on Saturday when I was setting up my tripod in the parking lot. The restaurant would be closing in fifteen minutes and right now all the customers had all the hot dogs they could handle for one day. My wife Cheryl, per usual, came along for the ride. Blackies was established at this very spot in 1928 by Arthur Blackman, a local Waterbury resident, and his wife Mary Mahoney who had come to America from Ireland to pursue her dream life. Although changing…

    Southford Falls in the Fall

I had been wanting to photograph Southford Fall in the fall and this was the last day I really had to do it before too many leaves were down. Unfortunately I would have to work in a fairly sustained driving rain. Not only did I have to be concerned with my equipment but the rain was knocking the leaves off the tree’s while I was. The rocks and leaves made for a slippery surface as I very carefully set up my tripod on the bank of the stream. I was perched about 6′ above the stream and the rain kept coming down. Being a bit clumsy and absent minded at…

Grazing Horses in the fall……….Hamden CT

I took a ride over to the Hamden Polo Grounds to see what I could find. It was a beautiful fall day and leaves were dropping fast. They had four fenced in fields camera accessible from the road to pick from. Each one had horses but varying backgrounds. I ultimately chose the image, with the three horses, as my favorite. It framed the horses nicely and had the most colorful fall backdrop. Photographed with a Sony Nex 7, 24.3MP, APS-C mirrorless camera and a Sony 18-55 F3.5-5.6 lens @ 54mm (35mm = 81mm). 1/320th, f5.6, ISO 800, Aperture Priority

Barn and Silo in Woodbury CT

Per usual, Cheryl mapped out our next barn stop in the car while I photographed this one. It’s double silo tells me it was most likely a cow barn back in the day for a small farm. I don’t know what’s its purpose is today. Is it used for storage, is someone living in there or are they trying to maintain the history? The fairly new roof tells me that they owners are taking care of it. Photographed with Sony A7RII, 42.3MP full framed mirrorless camera and a Sony 24-105 F4 lens @ 41mm. 1/200th, f11, ISO 640, Aperture Priority.

    It’s fall at the castle.

I set up my tripod on the sidewalk at the south end of Hubbard Park’s pond aimed at the Castle waiting for the light. In short time it lit portions of the foliage beneath the Castle causing their beauty to speak to you. The shutter was snapped and yes I was lucky enough to catch that hawk circling the castle he was not added in later. Walter Hubbard, a local business magnate, donated all 1800 acres to the City of Meriden in 1900 with the one stipulation that the City could not reap any financial rewards from the towns folks and I think they’ve lived up to that commitment. The…

Refurbishing the iconic Greyledge Farm Barn!

So I set my sail to Roxbury CT on this absolutely gorgeous fall day in hopes of photographing the iconic Greyledge Farm Barn. Well, much to my surprise, upon arriving, the barn was being refurbished. There were workers removing and replacing individual boards on the exterior cladding. How many workers did you count? If you counted (7) you were correct! Look carefully and you’ll find them all. So the other big surprise was that the American Flag, which this barn is known for, is missing from the front end where you see the (3) workers on the ladder. I attached another image, I took several years ago, which depicts the…

One with the land in Harwinton CT

Not sure if this would be classified as a barn or a storage shed but either way I was struck by it’s beautiful appearance. Tucked into a small hill and adorned with ivy it was unusual and had eye appeal. Harwinton CT is its home. Photographed with a Sony A7RII, 42MP full framed mirrorless camera and a Sony 24-105 F4 lens at 46mm. ISO 500, 1/640th, f11, Aperture Priority
