A perfect barn in Southbury.
I’ve been after this barn for months but there were always cars parked in front of it and people working in or around it which precluded me from taking the shot. Although, this day, there was one person working in the barn I knew it wouldn’t get much better than this so I took my shots. With no real place to park my car I just idled across the street for a brief second to take the wide angle shot. I left, changed lenses, then returned idling once again for another second or two and took my closer shots. I must say this is one of the most pristine nicely…

White Oak Schoolhouse, Southbury CT (c.1840)
This blog entry is part of an ongoing project called “One Room Schoolhouses in CT”). If you’re interested in the history of one room schoolhouses in CT I suggest you purchase CONNECTICUT SCHOOLHOUSES THROUGH TIME by Melinda K. Elliott. This book was has been a very helpful resource for me as I did my research. At time of writing this book was available on AMAZON. The White Oak Schoolhouse (built in 1840) 886 Main St., Southbury CT 06488 I don’t know how many years this served as a schoolhouse in this community now of 20,000 people. At the time of it’s use I’m sure the local population was quite small. It’s…

Old barn in Avon.
Cheryl and I were driving through Avon just enjoying the fall day. Virtually every barn we passed I had photographed before years ago, including this one. However, we liked this particular camera angle and the fall weather so I decided to photograph it once again. Photographed with a Sony A7RV, 61mp mirrorless camera in APS-C crop mode. I used a Sony 24-70 F2.8 GMII lens @ 94mm. 1/50th, f16, ISO 100, Aperture Priority

More beautiful as time goes by.
Cheryl and I were working the Southbury CT area looking for barns and came across this one out in the country. I didn’t tag it well so it was either in Southbury or one of the surrounding towns. I’m sure it’s owned by someone but from the standpoint of upkeep and usage it’s abandoned in my opinion. These are the types of barns I relish. Time just ages them so beautifully. The paint is gone, the boards are peeling and there is probably more wildlife that calls this home than you can imagine. Photographed with a Sony A7RV, 61mp mirrorless camera and a Sony 24-70 F2.8 GMII lens @ 38…

Beautiful old aging barn in Southbury
To me this barn is very striking. It appears to sit abandoned in the middle of the woods with no lead in road or path. Father time is having it’s way as the foliage creeps in around it and the paint fades. Two things I found unique. There is about 6′ overhang on the side nearest the viewer. You don’t see that on barns. The silo is also unique as well as the silos roof. The silo almost has a “home made” look to it but I’m sure was functional and I think gives this barn a lot of character. It’s a true relic. Photographed in the winter with a…

Abandoned Old Church in Southbury CT
While Cheryl and I were on the hunt for barns in Southbury we stumbled upon this old gem. Which, of course, isn’t a barn. I thought, at first, that it was some type of meeting house back in the day. I wasn’t able to find anything on the internet about it so I reached out to the Southbury Historical Society. Their President was kind enough to write back to me. She informed me that this was a church from 1827 – 1942 and that the steeple had fallen off. It was eventually sold to the resident living next door. Its current status is a little sketchy. Having said all that I…

Octagon Barn in Southbury CT
Cheryl and I set our sails to Southbury CT, in early March, where we wanted to photograph this unique octagon barn. There were no trespassing signs around it’s circumference leading me to believe that the owner has seen his share of visitors over the years. I very subtly parked my car off the road down the street and walked over to the opposite side of the road to take the images. In and out in less than two minutes. I am very sensitive to homeowners and barn owners as to not impose upon them. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any historical data on this barn except that the Southbury Historical Society…

Fall at the park…………
Early in my life I spent lived 15+ years in Meriden CT. Besides their library the one thing that I took considerable advantage of, and still do to this day, is Hubbard Park. It’s a beautiful sprawling park at with Castle Craig looking down upon it from atop the mountain. It’s visited by individuals, groups and families all week long. It was a real gift bestowed upon the City of Meriden by Mr. Hubbard back in the day. If you were to visit the park and take the approx. 1.5 mile road that leads up to Castle Craig one of the first vista’s you’ll pass is the Meriden Reservoir on…
