    Gold Star Bridge & Train Steel Truss Bridge – New London, CT

    [wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”] The Gold Star Memorial Bridge comprises a pair of bridges that carry northbound and southbound traffic on Interstate 95 over the Thames River.  These bridges connect New London and Groton, CT.  The first bridge was built in 1943 and second bridge was built 30 years later as traffic flow warranted.  This is the largest bridge in the State of Connecticut. Groton, CT is well know as the home of General Dynamics – Electric Boat Division.  Many nuclear  subs have been and continue to be built at this location. Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull spearheaded efforts to build Fort Trumbull in New London where the Thames River meets the Long Island Sound om 1775. The fort was completed in 1977.
