• Journey's,  Photo Walks

On a weekday afternoon in early October I stopped by the Meriden Green as I had never been there before and was impressed by the foot bridge structure. My visit did not disappoint. This 14 acre park was quite beautiful. It’s many walkways and open greens allow for public recreation. There is a nice amphitheater with ample seating on one end. The brook running through the center of the park is a nice touch that adds visual appeal as well as some flood protection if I understand correctly. I wandered through the park from one end to the other and one side to the other. There were very few people…

Hop River State Park Trail Bridge, Andover CT

In 2012 this beautiful foot bridge was installed to complete a major gap in the rails to trails walkway which runs from Manchester to Willimantic through Hop River State Park spanning Rt. 316 below. Before the bridge was in place most folks were forced to stop and turn around as there was no easy way to get to the other side. Not any more. PLEASE NOTE:  This image was digitally altered in the area the ground under the bridge for artistic quality. Photographed with Nikon D7100 and 18-55 zoom lens.

Shelton, CT – Bridges & more.

[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]As you look through the slide show you’ll see a photo of a dam. This is known as Ousatonic Dam. No I didn’t forget the “H”. It was planned and it’s construction overseen by Edward Shelton, in 1891, for the Ousatonic Water Co. The dam, constructed from 1867-1870 right after the Civil War, is 637 ft. long and 20 ft. high. It was built for the purpose of harnessing water power, from the Housatonic River,  for what Mr. Shelton hoped to be a spawning industrial community. There were canal’s for small boats to pass the dam at the time but they are not in use today. Mr.…

    Bridges – Seymour, CT

[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]Seymour, CT is located along the Naugatuck River in what as known as the “valley” to locals.  It is situated about 20 miles south of Waterbury, CT. For those of you that visit this site you know by now that I enjoy chronically  unique bridges in CT and adjacent areas.  I found the foot bridge in the attached photo to be somewhat unique.  I also think I’d make every effort to get across it as soon as possible as it looks like a strong wind could take it down.

    Ashton Mill – Cumberland, RI

[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]ASHTON MILL 51 Front Street Cumberland, RI 02864 The attached photo’s represent what is a refurbished mid nineteenth century factory currently serving as upscale apartments. My interest in taking photographs of old factories begins with my attempt to document the decline of the industrial revolution in Connecticut and parts of RI and W.MASS. Notes about the slideshow (the images are not in any particular order): 1) Blackstone River adjacent to the factory with canal (not shown) down stream. 2) Foot bridge built in recent times to resemble original bridge constructed in early 1800’s. 3) Large bridge is Rt. 116 4) Large brick building is the factory 5)…

[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”] Holyoke, MA is a small city of approx. 40,000 people situated in Western, MA just north of the City of Springfield. Once a thriving mill town made up of a diversified immigrant popular there now sits many abandoned buildings that once housed those companies. These photographs document a few of those businesses as seen today. These pictures were taken along the south side of the City near Canal Street.
