The Famous “Blackies Hot Dog Stand”, Cheshire CT
Blackies Restaurant (est. 1928) 2200 Waterbury Rd., Cheshire CT 06410 Blackies neon lights shine bright against the dark backdrop of this fall evening. It was 7:45 PM on Saturday when I was setting up my tripod in the parking lot. The restaurant would be closing in fifteen minutes and right now all the customers had all the hot dogs they could handle for one day. My wife Cheryl, per usual, came along for the ride. Blackies was established at this very spot in 1928 by Arthur Blackman, a local Waterbury resident, and his wife Mary Mahoney who had come to America from Ireland to pursue her dream life. As I drove by this house it struck me as unusual and rather special sitting in the woods. Almost fiary tale like. So I turned around and went back and took a couple of photographs. Remnants of what once was a dairy farm.
This was a working farm for nearly all of the 20th century. In 2000 the Town of Cheshire purchased the 93 acre property. The town rents out the old Lassen homestead (not shown).
