Swamp – Goshen, CT
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”] Roadside Swamp in Goshen, CT While driving through Goshen, CT recently I spotted what I thought was a rather eerie and interesting photo opportunity. I couldn’t resist the urge to take these three photographs. I wish I could have been there during a full moon to capture what would probably be a “ghost like” setting.

Hammonasset State Park, Madison, CT
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”] Hammonasset State Park, Madison, CT CT’s largest beach offers two miles of coastline for sunning or relaxing as well as a substantial camping area. If you want to photograph the coast the best times to go are at sunrise or just before sunset. Not only will the beach be less crowded but the skies are rich with colors. However my schedule rarely permits those hours so, for me, the best time to get unobstructed shots is during the winter. I took these photographs on a cool, brisk, windy day in March. There were no fishermen, no beach strollers and certainly no sunbathers. I had run of…

Abandoned Power Plant – New Haven
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”] English Station 10 Grand Street Fair Haven section of New Haven, CT With it’s idle looming smokestacks, decaying brick and mortar, and an eerie silence this old power plant exudes a rather ominous feel to the passer by. Known as “English Station” the thermal power plant was built from 1924 – 1929 and ceased operation in 1992. Having been abandoned for 21 years the owners and the State of CT are apparently perplexed as to how to handle the PCB laden contaminated oil and asbestos at the facility. Eight large transformers were drained but there were no takers to purchase the oil and it was never…

Abandoned Asylums of New England – Book Review
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”] ABANDONED ASYLUMS of NEW ENGLAND A pictorial table top book with sporadic essays. Images shown were taken by John Gray and are property of John Gray Photography. They cannot be copied or reproduced without express permission of John Gray. First a disclaimer: John Gray is married to my cousin and I consider him a friend. Now having said that I would simply choose to not write anything in my blog if I didn’t care for his work. However, that’s NOT the case. When I opened up his book my jaw dropped and I was mesmerized by the story telling images that just bellowed out distant voices of the…

Abandoned Building – Stratford, CT
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]While working as a salesman in Stratford, CT I observed this abandoned building. Research has determined that this is the old Ross and Roberts Manufacturing plant which had closed their doors for good, in early 2008 due to increased taxation and operating costs. Best I can determine they manufactured: Fabric,Laminating & Bonding (Mfrs), Coated & Laminated Paper NEC (Mfrs), Plastics-Products-Retail. This building occupies the space between the redemption center and a Dunkin Donuts on 1299 West Broad St. The area was posted “private property” so I did not choose to venture off the roadway. The remnants of a rather large foundation are evidence that a good sized building…

Ashton Mill – Cumberland, RI
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]ASHTON MILL 51 Front Street Cumberland, RI 02864 The attached photo’s represent what is a refurbished mid nineteenth century factory currently serving as upscale apartments. My interest in taking photographs of old factories begins with my attempt to document the decline of the industrial revolution in Connecticut and parts of RI and W.MASS. Notes about the slideshow (the images are not in any particular order): 1) Blackstone River adjacent to the factory with canal (not shown) down stream. 2) Foot bridge built in recent times to resemble original bridge constructed in early 1800’s. 3) Large bridge is Rt. 116 4) Large brick building is the factory 5)…

Fantasy of Lights – Lighthouse Point Park
[wzslider height=”800″ info=”true” lightbox=”true”]Fantasy of Lights Lighthouse Point Park 2 Lighthouse Rd New Haven, CT 06512 2012 fees:$10 passenger cars/family vans; $25 for 15-passenger vans or mini-buses; $50 for buses. The entry fee benefits the Easter Seals. On a brisk winters evening Cheryl and I took a ride through Lighthouse Point Park to view the much touted holiday light display. There are at least (25) various light scenes. Each scene is created and sponsored by an area business. Tune your radio into the appropriate station and music and narration will accompany your travels through the display. It was quite crowded when we drove through. I really wasn’t able to get shots off…

Original Factory of Colt Firearms
These images reflect photographs I took of how the original Colt Armory looks today (Feb., of 2012). It was named “armory” obviously due to the tremendous amount of firearms that were housed within. The factory and surrounding buildings comprised a complex that sat on approx. 260 acres just south of downtown Hartford, CT. This consisted of the main building which encompassed a myriad of machining centers, foundry, Colt Mansion (I will photograph at a later time), warehousing, garages, and office space. In addition (20) six-eight family houses were built on Huyshope and Van Block Avenue for their workers. The main factory faced Interstate 91, (which is literally across the street), on…
