During late July Cheryl and I visited the Connecticut Trolley Museum. There are a handful of trolley cars outside but most were inside. Unfortunately my Sony Nex 7 camera suffers from overheating, (sometimes), when shooting video. As I had just shot a video this problem reared it’s ugly head. As a result when I went inside to photograph the cars I lost the ability to use flash. This caused me to shoot all indoor shots at ISO 1600, (very noisy on this camera), and F1.8 (very shallow depth of field). OK now that I’ve given you my excuse for sub par photography let’s continue.
We began our journey with a (6) mile trek on the museums dedicated length of trolley track. It was (3) miles out and (3) miles back. If you get car sick easily this isn’t the ride for you. Whenever the conductor increased the speed the car would rock from side to side quite noticeably. If I had to guess that is because the railroad ties under the tracks need replacing. Having said that I would still say the ride was fun and most folks, particularly kids, will enjoy it.
You’ll notice a couple of abandoned train cars in the photo’s above. Those were photographed as we zoomed by at about 40 mph.
Back on the grounds there was a local flea market. After a brief run through we went inside the Trolley Museum.
After purchasing our tickets we went over to the rather outdated movie theater. I made quite a ruckus as I dropped unknowingly into a broken theater seat. The video, however, was actually quite informative. I have included some of it in this post but the quality stinks.
From there we went inside where the bulk of the cars reside all huddled up under one roof. It’s pretty obvious that the only attention these old trolley cars get is the patter of footsteps from visitors peering into their innards.
Nothing against the volunteers at the CT Trolley Museum for without them there would be no museum. I do, however, have to believe they really need financial contributions to update things a tad.
On the other hand I actually enjoyed the museum and I think others might as well. I would lean towards train enthusiasts, children and the whimsical that just want to do something different for a couple of hours.
